Australia's EV Charging Network: What Changed in August 2026

Australia’s listed public charging network grew in August 2026. Between 2 August 2026 and 1 September 2026, the number of public charging sites in our dataset went from 1338 to 1344 (+6), with DC fast-charge sites moving from 748 to 750 and free-to-use sites from 141 to 141.

The story of the month is not the big-network hardware, though. It is two small pins at Coles Bay, the first owner-contributed listings on our map, sitting in one of the east coast’s most stubborn charging gaps.

The Freycinet pair deserves the longer note. Coles Bay had no listed charging at all, and the nearest DC fast charger is at Swansea, 14 km across Great Oyster Bay but 55 km and about 45 minutes by road, so anyone staying on the peninsula has had to plan their whole visit around it. “John”, who owns the Beach Break and Wave Front holiday houses at Freycinet (both managed by Freycinet Holiday Houses), installed a 7.4 kW tethered Type 2 charger at each property and offers charging free to staying guests. The remoteness that created the gap also made the build harder: the houses are a couple of hours’ drive from either Hobart or Launceston, and part of the project was finding an installer willing to make that trip repeatedly. John credits Alistair and the team at Enlightened Energy with a genuinely custom job, configuring solar, a 22 kWh battery and both chargers to work together on Aurora’s tariffs so the free guest charging does not sting on the power bill. The chargers are guest-only, so both map pins carry a “guest access only” note and the booking number rather than posing as public sites. It is the kind of quiet, owner-funded infrastructure that never makes a network press release, and we would happily list more of it: if you offer guest charging at your property, get in touch.

Elsewhere, Tesla’s Mansfield Supercharger is the one to note for trip planners: at 325 kW it is now among the fastest options on the road to Mount Buller, where Chargefox also added a 22 kW destination unit at Horse Hill.

About this data

This report compares our editorial charging dataset as of 2 August 2026 and 1 September 2026. The dataset combines Open Charge Map (CC-BY-4.0) with our own curated additions for remote corridors, and it excludes the OpenStreetMap layer we show on the map, which is not verified to the same standard. Newly listed is not always newly built: sites sometimes join the source data after they open.
