Driving an EV from Perth to Margaret River: Charging Stops & What If You Run Flat
Perth to Margaret River is a 280 km drive made easy by WA's RAC Electric Highway — one or two stops at Mandurah, Bunbury or Busselton. Here are the stops and what to do if you run flat.

Perth to Margaret River is Western Australia’s classic wine-and-surf road trip, about 280 km down the Forrest and Bussell highways. It’s become a comfortable EV drive thanks to WA’s RAC Electric Highway and newer fast chargers along the South West. Here are the stops, and the contingency plan for a corridor where towns are further apart than on the east coast.
Can you drive an EV from Perth to Margaret River?
Yes. It’s roughly 280 km, about three hours, down the Forrest Highway (M2) and Bussell Highway (A10). As of mid-2026 charging is good: fast chargers around Mandurah and through Bunbury and Busselton, supported by WA’s RAC Electric Highway, the state motoring club’s own network of chargers across regional WA.
For most EVs that’s one or two stops — commonly Bunbury or Busselton. Longer-range cars that leave Perth full can do it without stopping. The planning point unique to WA is that the network is younger and the towns further apart than on the east coast, so top up before the quieter stretches.

Pay through the relevant network app — the RAC Electric Highway, Chargefox and Tesla all operate in the South West. The anchors most drivers use are Mandurah, Bunbury and Busselton. For charging in the city before you set off, see our guide to EV charging and roadside assistance in Perth.
How to plan your stops
Leave Perth at 90–100%, and a single charge around Bunbury or Busselton sets you up for Margaret River and getting around the region. Margaret River itself leans more on destination charging, so plan to arrive with a buffer and top up at your accommodation. The longest charge-free stretch is south of Mandurah toward Bunbury — fill up before it, not after.
What if you run out of charge between Perth and Margaret River?
Charge to 80% at the anchor towns and a flat battery is unlikely. The longest charge-free stretch is the run south of Mandurah toward Bunbury (see the live figure above) — within a single charge for any moderate-range EV. As on all WA drives, the consideration is less the distance between chargers than the fact that help and the next town are further away than on a city motorway.
If you do run flat:
- Get safe. Off the road, hazard lights on, stand clear of traffic.
- Call RAC. 13 11 11 reaches RAC, which covers Western Australia and runs the RAC Electric Highway. Tesla drivers can use the Tesla app.
- Say it’s an EV. Most EVs must be flat-bed towed — saying so up front gets the right truck first time, which matters more when it’s coming from further away.
- Ask about the options. Usually a tow to the nearest fast charger; ask whether a mobile top-up reaches where you are.
This is a drive where checking your roadside cover before you leave matters — confirm it handles out-of-charge events and check the tow distance limit, because out here a tow to the nearest charger can be a long one.
