Driving an EV from Brisbane to the Gold Coast: Do You Even Need to Charge?
Brisbane to the Gold Coast is an 80 km hop you can do on a single charge — no mid-trip charging needed. Here's where to top up if you want to, and what to do in the rare case you run flat on the M1.

This is the one EV road trip in Australia where the honest answer to “where do I charge?” is “you probably don’t need to.” Brisbane to the Gold Coast is about 80 km down the Pacific Motorway — a round trip any modern EV handles on a single charge. So this guide is short: where to top up if you want to, and the contingency plan for the rare flat battery on the M1.
Do you need to charge an EV from Brisbane to the Gold Coast?
No. At roughly 80 km each way (about an hour without traffic), the return trip is comfortably within any EV’s range. Leave Brisbane with around 50% or more and you can spend the day on the coast and drive home without plugging in. The smart move is to charge overnight at home or at your Gold Coast accommodation rather than stopping mid-trip.
The exception is if you arrive in Brisbane already low after a longer trip, or you’re continuing further south. In that case there’s fast charging on the way and throughout the Gold Coast.
Fast-charging stops on the M1, if you want one
The rapid charging options along the Pacific Motorway, drawn live from Open Charge Map:
The standout mid-route stop is Coomera, roughly halfway, with an ultra-rapid Evie site that’ll add a big chunk of range in a few minutes if you want a buffer. Otherwise the Gold Coast itself is well covered — see our guide to EV charging and roadside assistance on the Gold Coast for charging once you arrive.
What if you run out of charge on the M1?
It’s genuinely unlikely on a drive this short, but the M1 is a busy, fast motorway and the verge is no place to be stranded. If you do run flat:
- Get safe. Pull well off the carriageway, hazard lights on, and stand clear of traffic behind the barrier. The M1 carries heavy, fast traffic — if anyone is in danger, call 000.
- Call RACQ. 13 11 11 reaches RACQ across South East Queensland. Tesla drivers can request help in the Tesla app.
- Say it’s an EV. Most EVs need a flatbed tow, not a conventional one — saying so up front gets the right truck sent first time.
- Ask for the nearest charger. The M1 corridor is dense with fast chargers, so a short tow to Coomera or back into the metro will have you moving again quickly.
It’s still worth knowing whether your roadside cover handles out-of-charge events before you rely on it — see our complete guide to EV roadside assistance in Australia. For the bigger picture on running flat, the out-of-charge guide covers what happens after you call.

On a drive this short it's unlikely, but if it happens get safely off the motorway with hazards on and call roadside assistance — 13 11 11 reaches RACQ across South East Queensland. Tell them it's an EV so they send a flatbed. You'll usually get a tow to the nearest fast charger, of which there are many along the M1 corridor.
