Driving an EV to the Barossa Valley: Charging & What If You Run Flat
Adelaide to the Barossa Valley is a 70 km day trip any EV does on a single charge. Here's where to charge in the Barossa and what to do in the rare case you run flat.

The Barossa Valley is one of the easiest EV day trips in the country — about 70 km from Adelaide, well within any EV’s range for a return trip with cellar-door stops in between. You won’t need to charge to get there, so this guide is short: where to top up in the Barossa if you want to, and what to do in the rare case you run flat.
Do you need to charge an EV to visit the Barossa Valley?
No. It’s roughly 70 km from Adelaide, about an hour up the Sturt Highway (A20). Leave with a reasonable charge and you can spend the day touring Tanunda, Nuriootpa and Angaston and drive home comfortably without plugging in. If you want a top-up, the Barossa towns have charging.

There’s fast charging on the way out of Adelaide around Elizabeth and Paralowie, and Tanunda and Nuriootpa in the Barossa itself. For charging back in the city, see our guide to EV charging and roadside assistance in Adelaide.
What if you run out of charge near the Barossa?
Genuinely unlikely on a trip this short, but if it happens:
- Get safe. Off the road, hazard lights on, clear of traffic.
- Call RAA. 13 11 11 reaches RAA, which covers South Australia. Tesla drivers can use the Tesla app.
- Say it’s an EV. Most EVs need a flatbed, not a conventional tow.
- Ask for the nearest charger. Usually a short tow to a Barossa town or back toward Adelaide.
It’s still worth confirming your roadside cover handles out-of-charge events — see our complete guide to EV roadside assistance in Australia, and the out-of-charge guide for what happens after you call. And the obvious one for wine country: if you’re tasting, have a non-drinking driver or a plan to get home.
