Free EV Charging Stations in Australia: The Full List

Every genuinely free public charging site in the country, listed by state with speeds, networks and last-verified dates. Customers-only sites excluded.

As of September 2026, Australia has 125 genuinely free public EV charging locations: sites where the listed cost is clearly free, with no purchase, patronage or daily cap attached. Most are 7–22 kW AC chargers at shopping centres, councils, clubs and visitor centres; 8 are DC fast chargers (40 kW or above). Every one of them is listed below, by state.

What counts as “free” here

This list is strict. A site only appears when the cost listed on Open Charge Map clearly says the charging is free, with no conditions attached. That means we exclude: How free sites compare with the whole network is on our charging statistics page.

  • Customers-only pricing – “free for patrons”, “free with purchase” and hotel-guest chargers (including most Tesla destination chargers) don’t qualify. Where a venue’s own listing says anyone can charge free but marks the site customers-and-visitors-only, we list it with that note rather than drop it.
  • Privately owned sites – anything Open Charge Map marks restricted or notice-required is not public charging, free or not.
  • Partly free networksJOLT gives every driver the first 7 kWh free each day, which is excellent, but paid rates apply beyond that, so it isn’t listed here.
  • Sites with no cost data – if Open Charge Map doesn’t say what a site costs, we assume it’s paid rather than guess.

The result is a shorter list than you’ll see on apps that count every “possibly free” pin, but every entry on it has data behind it.

Free charging is disappearing – check before you rely on it

Australia’s pool of free chargers shrinks every year as electricity and hardware costs catch up with the networks. The NRMA regional network, free for members for years, started charging in late 2023 and moved to location-based pricing in August 2025, and shopping centres are steadily adding fees or time limits. Each site in the tables above shows when the community last verified it, and sites with older dates deserve more caution. If a listed site has started charging money, report it on Open Charge Map or email us and the next monthly refresh will catch it.

For what paid charging costs when there’s no free option around, see our guides to public charging in Australia and what it costs to charge an electric car. And if you’re ever stopped with a flat battery, our EV roadside assistance guide covers exactly who to call.

Frequently asked questions

How many free EV charging stations does Australia have?

Around 125 genuinely free public charging sites as of September 2026, led by Western Australia and New South Wales. The tables on this page are regenerated with every monthly data refresh, so they are the current count. The pool shrinks over time as formerly free sites move to paid charging.

Are free EV chargers fast enough to be worth using?

Most are 7 to 22 kW AC destination chargers, which suits parking somewhere for an hour or more: shopping, overnight stays, long lunches. A couple of dozen are 40 kW+ DC fast chargers, the fastest listed at 180 kW. For a quick highway top-up you will almost always be using a paid fast charger.

Do I need an app or account to use a free charger?

Often no. Most free sites are independent units at councils, clubs and shopping centres where you just plug in. Free sites operated by a network such as Chargefox or ChargePoint may still require the network's app or RFID card to start the session, even though the session costs nothing.

Why isn't JOLT on this list?

JOLT gives every driver the first 7 kWh free each day at its ad-funded kerbside chargers, then paid rates apply. That makes it conditional rather than genuinely free, so it does not meet this list's strict definition. It is still the best free-ish option in the cities JOLT covers.

Is Tesla destination charging free for other EVs?

Some Tesla destination chargers at wineries, hotels and clubs are listed as free, and most Australian units use a Type 2 connector that other EVs can plug into. Sites that are free only for patrons or guests are excluded from this list, but signage rules the day: check on arrival.

A charger on this list now costs money. What should I do?

Free charging is steadily disappearing, and open data can lag a price change. Check the last-verified date next to the site, and report the change on Open Charge Map or email us at hello@evroadside.com.au so the next monthly refresh picks it up.

Charger data © Open Charge Map contributors, licensed CC-BY-4.0. Listings show sites known to exist, not live availability, and prices can change faster than open data. Check signage or the operating network's app before you rely on a free session.
